Introduction
A thermostat can only react to the temperature where its main unit is installed. That can become a problem when your thermostat sits in a hallway while your bedroom, home office, basement, or upstairs rooms are noticeably warmer or colder.
The **ecobee SmartSensor 2-Pack** is designed to solve that problem by adding temperature and occupancy information from other rooms. Instead of relying entirely on the thermostat's location, compatible ecobee systems can use readings from the sensors to better understand where people are and which rooms need attention.
The sensors are wireless, compact, easy to install, and designed to work inside the ecobee ecosystem. Features such as **Follow Me**, Smart Home/Away, temperature averaging, and long battery life make them particularly useful for homes with multiple rooms or floors.
But there is an important catch: these are not universal smart-home sensors. They are primarily an upgrade for people who already own a compatible ecobee thermostat.
So, **is the ecobee SmartSensor 2-Pack worth buying?** For the right ecobee owner, yes—but the relatively high price and lack of humidity sensing are worth considering before purchasing.

### Bottom Line
**The ecobee SmartSensor 2-Pack is a strong choice for ecobee thermostat owners who want better room-by-room comfort and automatic temperature prioritization.**
Its biggest strengths are accurate temperature sensing, occupancy detection, Follow Me functionality, simple wireless installation, and a battery rated for up to five years.
Its biggest weaknesses are the price, lack of humidity sensing, occasional occupancy-response delays, and the fact that it requires the ecobee ecosystem.
# What Is the ecobee SmartSensor?
The ecobee SmartSensor is a small wireless accessory that extends your ecobee thermostat's ability to monitor your home.
Rather than measuring temperature only at the thermostat, you can place sensors in important rooms such as:
* Master bedrooms
* Children's bedrooms
* Home offices
* Living rooms
* Upstairs rooms
* Problem areas that are consistently too hot or cold
The thermostat can then use these additional readings when managing comfort settings. This is especially useful when the thermostat itself is located somewhere that does not represent the temperature of the room you're actually using.
The SmartSensor also detects occupancy through passive infrared technology, allowing compatible ecobee systems to prioritize rooms where people are present.

# Why the ecobee SmartSensor Is Useful
## 1. Better Room Temperature Control
The biggest reason to buy these sensors is simple: **your thermostat may not be in the room that matters most.**
For example, imagine your thermostat is in a downstairs hallway. The hallway reaches the desired temperature, so the HVAC system reduces output. Meanwhile, an upstairs bedroom may still feel too warm.
Adding a SmartSensor to that bedroom gives the ecobee system another temperature reference.
This can make a noticeable difference in:
* Two-story houses
* Homes with long HVAC duct runs
* Rooms exposed to direct sunlight
* Bedrooms located far from the thermostat
* Home offices
* Homes with inconsistent heating or cooling
The supplied reviews consistently identify temperature balancing as the product's main strength.
# 2. Occupancy Detection
Temperature sensing is only part of the story.
The SmartSensor also uses PIR motion detection to determine whether a room is occupied. That information can help the ecobee system understand which rooms are currently being used.
This is especially useful in a home where people move between rooms throughout the day.
For example:
**Morning:** Home office is occupied.
**Afternoon:** Living room becomes the main occupied area.
**Night:** Bedroom becomes the priority.
This is where **Follow Me** becomes one of the most useful features.
# 3. Follow Me Can Prioritize the Room You're Using
Follow Me uses occupancy information to prioritize rooms where movement has recently been detected.
Instead of treating every room equally all the time, the system can focus temperature calculations around the spaces you're actually using.
For remote workers, this could mean better comfort in a home office during the workday.
For families, it can be useful when bedrooms and living spaces have different temperature requirements.
The feature is one of the main reasons the SmartSensor offers more value than a simple temperature-only sensor.
# 4. Long Battery Life
Battery maintenance is another major advantage.
Each sensor uses a **CR2477 coin-cell battery**, with the supplied specifications rating battery life at up to approximately five years under normal conditions.
That means you aren't constantly opening the sensor or replacing batteries every few months.
For a smart-home accessory that is designed to operate quietly in the background, long battery life is a major convenience.
Actual battery life can vary depending on usage and operating conditions.
# 5. Easy Wireless Installation
Installation is one of the easiest parts of the SmartSensor experience.
There is no complicated wiring.
A typical setup involves:
1. Open the ecobee app.
2. Choose the option to add a device.
3. Remove the battery tab.
4. Scan the sensor's QR code.
5. Give the sensor a room name.
6. Place or mount it in the desired location.
The supplied review describes setup as taking only a few minutes, with automatic pairing handled through the ecobee app.
This makes the sensors approachable even for people who don't consider themselves smart-home experts.
# Design and Build Quality
The SmartSensor uses a compact white enclosure with a minimalist appearance.
At roughly 1.6 inches square, it is small enough to sit discreetly on a shelf, table, nightstand, or other suitable location.
Mounting flexibility is another advantage.
Depending on placement, users can use:
* A desktop/magnetic stand
* A wall bracket
* Adhesive mounting
* Suitable metal surfaces
The compact design means the sensor doesn't need to become a visible part of your room decor.
# Real-World Performance
## Temperature Accuracy
Temperature measurement is where the SmartSensor performs particularly well.
The purpose isn't simply to give you another number in an app. The additional reading can give your ecobee thermostat more useful information about the rooms that matter to you.
This can be particularly valuable when the thermostat is affected by:
* Hallway drafts
* Sunlight
* Nearby appliances
* Poor thermostat placement
* Differences between floors
The supplied reviews rate temperature performance very highly.
## Occupancy Performance
Occupancy detection works well for sustained presence, but it isn't necessarily instantaneous.
The second review specifically notes that occupancy updates can occur periodically rather than continuously, with some situations taking longer to register.
That means the SmartSensor is better viewed as a smart climate-control tool than a real-time motion detector.
For someone working in an office for several hours, this is unlikely to be a major issue.
For someone quickly walking into a room for 30 seconds, the response may not be as immediate as expected.
# Energy-Saving Potential
The SmartSensor can contribute to energy efficiency by helping compatible ecobee systems recognize when rooms are occupied or empty.
Smart Home/Away features can adjust comfort settings based on occupancy, reducing the need to condition an empty home.
The supplied material also references ecobee's claim of **up to 23% annual energy savings**, but actual results depend heavily on the home, climate, HVAC system, schedule, thermostat settings, and usage.
So it would be misleading to promise every buyer a specific percentage of savings.
Think of the SmartSensor as a tool that can **help reduce unnecessary HVAC operation**, rather than a guaranteed money-saving device.
# Smart Home Integration
The SmartSensor is designed primarily around the ecobee ecosystem.
The supplied material identifies compatibility with platforms and ecosystems including:
* ecobee smart thermostats
* Amazon Alexa
* Apple HomeKit
* Compatible smart-home routines
The sensor can also contribute occupancy information to compatible automations.
However, compatibility is one of the product's biggest limitations.
**You should not buy this sensor expecting it to function as a universal standalone temperature sensor.**
# Important Limitation: No Humidity Sensor
One feature missing from the SmartSensor is humidity measurement.
The device focuses on:
* Temperature
* Occupancy/motion
It does **not** provide room-level relative humidity readings.
If humidity monitoring is important to your smart-home setup, another type of sensor may be a better choice.
Both supplied reviews identify this as a notable limitation.

# Who Should Buy the ecobee SmartSensor 2-Pack?
### 🏠 Multi-Story Homeowners
If your upstairs bedrooms are consistently warmer or cooler than the main floor, these sensors can provide more useful room-level information.
### 💻 Remote Workers
A sensor in your home office can help prioritize the room where you spend much of your workday.
### 👨👩👧👦 Families
Families using multiple bedrooms and living spaces can benefit from occupancy-based comfort management.
### ⚡ Energy-Conscious Homeowners
If you're trying to avoid heating or cooling empty rooms, occupancy-based features may help reduce unnecessary HVAC operation.
### 🌡️ People With Hot or Cold Spots
This is arguably the strongest reason to buy the product.
If your thermostat is technically working correctly but certain rooms never feel comfortable, SmartSensors may be a practical solution.
# Who Should Skip It?
### ❌ Non-ecobee Users
If you don't own a compatible ecobee thermostat, this isn't the right sensor.
### ❌ Budget Shoppers
At around $100 for the two-pack in the supplied review material, the price can feel high for relatively simple sensor hardware.
### ❌ Humidity-Conscious Buyers
If you specifically need humidity readings in every room, choose a sensor that includes a humidity measurement.
### ❌ Buyers Looking for a Security System
The SmartSensor can contribute to certain security-related functions, but the supplied material indicates that advanced security functionality may require an ecobee Smart Security subscription.
# Is the ecobee SmartSensor 2-Pack Worth It?
The answer depends heavily on your home.
If your ecobee thermostat already provides good temperature control throughout the house, you may not notice enough improvement to justify the extra cost.
But if you have:
* A two-story home
* An upstairs bedroom that stays hot
* A cold basement
* A frequently used home office
* Temperature differences between rooms
* A desire for occupancy-based HVAC control
then the SmartSensor becomes much easier to justify.
The value isn't really in the physical sensor itself. The value comes from giving your ecobee thermostat **better information about where you are and what temperature those rooms actually have.**
# Final Verdict
The **ecobee SmartSensor 2-Pack** is one of the more useful accessories for homeowners already invested in the ecobee ecosystem.
Its strongest advantages are excellent temperature sensing, occupancy detection, Follow Me functionality, simple installation, flexible placement, and long battery life.
The product isn't perfect. The price is relatively high, there is no humidity sensing, occupancy response isn't always immediate, and reported reliability issues mean buyers should purchase from a retailer with a reasonable return policy.
Still, if your biggest smart-home frustration is a **bedroom that's too hot, an office that's too cold, or uneven temperatures across multiple floors**, these sensors can make your existing ecobee thermostat considerably more useful.
### Final Rating: ⭐ 4.5/5
**Buy it if:** You already own a compatible ecobee thermostat and want better room-by-room comfort.
**Skip it if:** You don't use ecobee, need humidity monitoring, or simply want the cheapest possible temperature sensor.

I have two ecobee thermostats in the hallways in my house. The sensors are small and unobtrusive. The base is magnetic and so the senor is easily pointed up or down.
With these sensors you can use the app to see the temperatures in rooms with the sensor and if the room is occupied. The thermostat monitors the sensors and room occupancy and will turn on the AC or Heat if the occupied room is too hot or cold.
Linking to the sensor to your ecobee thermostat is really easy. Once linked it all just works.
I plan on getting two more for my living room and home office.

5 out of 5 starsVery useful for multi-floor and/or old houses

Been using ecobee for years in two different houses. These new sensors are more pleasantly designed and perform great. We have a 120 year old three story house with 2 systems and a mini-split. The second floor runs on the same system as the first floor. So, these sensors do a great job of monitoring both floors and telling the system what to do. I have a few mounted on the wall and some that use the stands. Installing them on the wall was very easy. You just stick them on. I like being able to monitor the temperature remotely from my phone and see how the system is performing.
They are even useful for systems that are not under control of ecobee. For example, we have one in our room with the mini split so that we can see how that system is doing. You can have the to monitor without having that temperature be included in the calculation that ecobee uses to set the temperature on the main system.

I live in a row house and was having some SERIOUS trouble keeping the upstairs level cooler. The main ecobee is on the 1st floor and would stop when it reached its targetted temperature and upstairs would still be baking! I placed 1 unit in each of the 3 bedrooms upstairs and 1 in my kitchen and it tracks the temperatures in each room in real time and keeps cooling the house until the hottest room (with one of these units) reached the targetted temperature! What a god send! I didnt know itd actually work but since I bought my home 3 years ago, this was the first summer where we weren't sweating and uncomfortable upstairs! TOTALLY WORTH THE PURCHASE!

Remember you are buying a tool to average temperatures so something like a cold addition or bedroom matter in the thermostat math mix, or a fireplace doesn't shut off your thermostat, there isn't much else its good for. If you need that function get it, we're happy with ours. Was harder to connect than it should have been..still works fine after you get it connected. It does improve scheduling insight and help you see where your house is struggling to keep temps, or perhaps where its not struggling such as a warm bedroom upstairs. Delivers a cool modern function for a reasonable price, worthwhile.

Loved the design of the package. The installation is simple and straightforward. Installing a sensor on the wall required *first* set the sensor on the mount by applying pressure on the top of the sensor until you hear or feel a click and only after that the stick the mount to the wall. I hope that the adhesive substance on the back of the mount is strong enough to hold the weight of the sensor for long time. I had to problem to detach the mount from the wall.
Sensors are small and look nit and stylish. Remote access via the app works fine.
